As Filmmaker, Gary has produced ten films reflecting the history and culture of the State of New Hampshire. These documentary and dramatic films have been aired locally, and nationally on cable broadcasts such as Cinemax, as well as on commercial and public television stations. Area Teens Invited to Sharon Arts School for Annual ArtAttack: Friday, April 29th

A Night of Creativity for Teens by Teens (Resched. from 4/1)

The nonprofit Sharon Arts School of Art and Craft invites teens from throughout the Monadnock region, their friends and the general public to the school in Sharon, NH this Friday, April 29th 2011, from 6pm to midnight for the 3rd annual “ArtAttack” – (RESCHEDULED From original date 4/1/11) a night of unlimited creativity designed by teens for teens.  The all-inclusive ticket cost ($15) provides creative teens from across southern New Hampshire and Northern Massachusetts with unparalleled access to a fun night of: painting and drawing, ceramics, jewelry design, wire sculpture, fashion fun, body painting and more, all under the direction of experienced Sharon Arts faculty and volunteers. Participants under 18 are required to have their pre-purchased ticked signed by a parent/guardian, or to bring a parent to sign a ticket at the door.

Designed to provide safe, fun, and creative beyond-school programming, Sharon Arts Center’s Youth and Teen programs have grown exponentially in recent years. From Summer ArtVenture Camp and After School Clay Clubs, to ArtAccess, an innovative year-long portfolio development program serving high schoolers from ConVal, Conant, Mascenic and other schools, Sharon Arts has become a magnet for creative youth in the Monadnock Region and beyond! Expanded scholarship opportunities have recently provided even more access to SAC programs and events in response to the needs of area families during this economic downturn.

The annual ArtAttack event began in 2008 as a means to expand the reach of the ArtAccess portfolio program to the peers of participants. In an effort to provide teens with a safe and fun alternative to the limited teen activities in the rural Monadnock region, portfolio program participants designed ArtAttack to simulate the college art environment by providing teen artists with a fun, nurturing place to become immersed in visual art, above and beyond the classroom.  Planned by teens, for teens, the event has become the highlight of the season for many participants who learn of the event largely via word of mouth, at their high schools, and through the program’s active Facebook page. In recent years, the event has drawn between 150 and 200 teen artists from across the Monadnock Region.  Sharon Arts provides faculty, materials, use of 6 state-of-the-art studios as well as ample volunteer chaperones to provide added supervision and safety for the event.

Lauryn Welch, a ConVal graduate and current student at Rhode Island School of Design participated in ArtAccess for several years, was an intern for the program, and plans to return this year as a volunteer.  “I can’t wait to come home and volunteer at ArtAttack over Spring Break,” explained Welch. “My involvement in ArtAccess and my active participation in ArtAttack is a special time I’ll never forget, and I’m excited to share it with another generation of artists!”

“Sharon Arts is excited to provide this opportunity to area teens,” cites SAC School Director, Alexandra Wall. “This event is magical and gives young artists in our community a safe and encouraging place to let their creativity run wild!”

This year’s ArtAttack will feature: Paint Rumpus Room: Using unusual tools (squirt guns, slides, balloons with darts, etc) to make marks in a paper covered room; Paperland: Paper will take on new dimensions as people create collaborative giant paper sculptures and origami, using cardboard, newspaper, papier mache, etc. and design their own moving paper puppets for a grand finale puppet show at the end of the night; T-shirt factory: Using a wide variety of mark-making techniques folks will print, stamp, paint, and texturize t-shirts (bring your own, or buy one for $2), then tailor/reconstruct it your own way, or use directions provided. Then, the dyes will be broken out, to add even more character. Figure Drawing: guided drawing from live models (after midnight ,18+); Mixed Media Mechanisms: Wire, found objects, and small sheet metal will be the materials employed to make art that may even move!  After 10pm, this studio will switch to a body art room, with Henna and facepainting. Ceramics: This clay studio will be open for clay play including a constantly evolving group sculpture; Glass bead and sculpture lampworking in the Glass Studio.

Admission paid to the event covers use of all materials and tools and helps to raise much-needed funds to support the ArtAccess teen portfolio program and to provide scholarship funds, resources, and expanded opportunities to the program’s participants including an annual art city overnight trip planned for June 2011.

There will be pizza and goodies for sale. Everyone will be welcome 6pm-midnight, and those who are 18+ can until 2am. Volunteers, and monetary and in-kind (food, raffle prize) donations to support this event are welcome: please contact Alexandra Wall at 603-924-7256 x3 or via email Alexandra@sharonarts.org.

Sharon Arts Center would like to thank the following local businesses for donating food, materials, and supplies to the event: Shaw’s Supermarket (Peterborough), Wal-Mart (Rindge), Hannaford’s (Rindge), Peterborough Pizza Barn, and Our Town Pizza (Peterborough).

James Mitschmyer. The black and white vase, standing about 24” high and showcasing Mitschmyer’s accomplished Asian-inspired brushwork of trees and mountainous landscapes, was a popular item during a silent auction at the Spring Open House on April 16th, dedicated to raising money for the Sharon Arts School’s ceramics program. This was the first silent auction event at the School of Art and Craft in 3 years. The Open House event helped to raise funds towards studio upgrades for the Ceramics program at Sharon Arts, including a new slab-roller for students who specialize in handbuilding. Funds acquired will also support new kiln parts, and glaze purchases to expand the resources available in the Sharon Arts clay program.
“The excitement and enthusiasm that was generated from the spirit of the auction was exactly the kind of atmosphere that Sharon Arts is always nurturing- both the students and the patrons were pleased to see the auction support our cause, knowing that ceramics students will benefit from the fundraising for years to come,” said Alexandra Wall, School Director. “We hope to have future events entail the same level of participation and excitement. I look forward to having visitors to the School again, rallying to support our programs and facility.”

Sharon Arts Center School of Art and Craft Announces Addition of Renowned Artist Elizabeth Johansson to Faculty

The Sharon Arts Center School of Art and Craft is pleased to announce the addition of Elizabeth Johansson of Hancock, NH to our faculty this spring. Elizabeth taught basic drawing and still-life

drawing many years ago at the Sharon Arts Center School. This spring and summer, Elizabeth will be teaching “Drawing the Still Life,” which is offered as a full-day Saturday workshop and can be taken Saturdays May 14 or June 4. She is thrilled to return as a faculty member this year!

“It is an honor to have Elizabeth Johansson return to the Sharon Arts faculty- she’s a real Monadnock treasure,” conveyed School Director Alexandra Wall. “Her exquisite work and her extensive teaching expertise will provide our students with a detailed understanding of more advanced still life drawing techniques, designed for artists looking to refine their skills.”

Elizabeth has been working as a visual artist for the past 30 years. Her drawings and paintings are often based on the still life, although portraits, self-portraits and landscapes are included in the spectrum of her work. Her drawings can be found in the permanent collections of The Currier Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, and the DeCordova Museum.  Johansson’s work has been represented by galleries in Boston and New York, and currently at Clark Gallery in Lincoln, MA. Elizabeth studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Along with working in her studio, Elizabeth has taught for 22 years at the New Hampshire Institute of Art.  Her classes included Drawing I, Advanced Drawing, Still Life Drawing, and Figure Drawing II, in the Bachelor of Fine Arts and Continuing Education Programs. For several years she taught still life drawing, basic drawing and pastel at Nashua Center for the Arts and also taught young artists at the Currier Art Center in Manchester, NH. Elizabeth resides in Hancock, NH with her husband artist James Aponovich (NH Artist Laureate 2006-10).

“Drawing the Still Life” will focus on understanding the still life, creating a composition, and considering perspective, proportion and spatial relationships. Each artist has their own style and vision; this workshop is designed to build skills and to motivate! There will be plenty of individual attention given to each participant to develop and improve skills as needed.

“It was at the Sharon Arts Center, back in the early 1980′s, in the old building, where I began to teach drawing. So, after more than 20 years teaching drawing and painting outside of the Monadnock area, I am happy to return to teach drawing at the Sharon Arts Center. I am looking forward to presenting the upcoming workshop, “Drawing the Still Life, expressed Johansson about her new teaching ventures in Sharon. “Sharpen your pencils, get some good paper, and join us for a day of drawing!”

We are eager to help folks in our community by making these opportunities to learn more financially accessible through Sharon Arts Center’s Scholarship Funds. It is our hope that the availability of these funds will help to remove some of the impediments that may exist between our programs and those who wish to participate in them. To that end, we encourage anyone who needs assistance to apply for an SAC Scholarship. For more information about Elizabeth Johansson’s offerings or our scholarship program, please contact our school at (603)924-7256.
