Teens involved in Sharon Arts Center’s Art Access program, which is open to high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors from throughout the Monadnock region, are planning an event they call Art Attack, which will begin at 6 pm on Friday, Mar. 23 and end at midnight. To be held at the Sharon Arts Center School of Art and Craft, 457 Rt. 123 in Sharon, the event is open to all ages and raises funds for the Art Access teen portfolio development program.
“No previous artistic experience is required to have fun,” says School Director Alexandra Wall, “so don’t worry if you can’t even draw a stick figure. Everyone can enjoy Art Attack!”
Participants, she said, are encouraged to wear an outfit they don’t mind getting paint on. Activities for the evening include playing with clay, paint, photography, and glass as well as hair designing and hat making (with a runway show at the end), a fire pit, an art photo booth, and a Happening Room. There will also be live music and food.
Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the School or the Exhibition Gallery at 30 Grove St. in Peterborough. They can also be purchased by calling (603) 924-7256 or emailing alexandra@sharonarts.org.
Art Access is an intensive program at Sharon Arts for students who are interested in increased exposure to and experience in the visual arts. Students meet weekly at the Sharon Arts Center School throughout the year to explore technical and theoretical aspects of art, career paths, and to investigate their creative potential as they strengthen their portfolios.
Beyond studio experience, students meet with artists and craftspeople, curators, gallerists, and other art professionals and take field trips to museums, galleries and studios throughout the region. With this knowledge and hand-on experience, they are able to effectively build and present their portfolios with peers and artists they meet along the way.
In addition to their weekly meetings, students are encouraged to participate in community volunteer projects that will contribute to increasing awareness of the importance of art in our community. A collaborative exhibit is the group’s final project. They design invitations, write publicity, frame their work and install their own show.

Artist and educator Alexia Rosoff will begin a three-session discussion series titled “The Art Around Us” at the Sharon Arts Center Exhibition Gallery, 30 Grove St., on Friday, Mar. 16 from 3 to 5 pm. Other sessions will be held on at the Gallery on Apr. 20 and May 18. Participants can attend any or all of the meetings. Attendance is free and open to the public, with a $5 suggested donation.
“The Art Around Us is a series of meetings where each of us has an opportunity to learn ways of seeing, learn new ways to comprehend, appreciate, and feel more of what artists may have intended in their creative artwork,” says Gallery Director Camellia Sousa. “The Art Around Us series will introduce participants to formal analysis as a tool for making art accessible to all, and give an opportunity to view and discuss the works on exhibit in the Sharon Arts Center Gallery of Fine Art and Craft.”
Alexia Rosoff received her BA from Williams College in Art History and Studio Art and an MA in Visual Media Arts from Emerson College. She studied communication design and digital fine art at Mass Art, digital filmmaking at the New York Film Academy, and was a docent at the Harvard Art Museums. Her teaching goals are to encourage experimentation, to combine history and academic techniques with the vitality of new ideas, and to create a supportive classroom environment. She is also offering classes in Trompe L’oeil painting and Digital Illustration at the Sharon Arts School.
Artist discussion in the Sharon Arts Exhibition Gallery, Peterborough, NH
Rosoff expresses that her art training taught her “to examine something critically, recognize and describe its attributes, place it in context and compare and contrast it” with the work of others, “making it possible to appreciate other art disciplines.” She goes on to say, “Have you ever wondered about the meaning of a work of art? Wondered why you like it (or don’t)? Wondered whether it’s ‘good’ or why it’s hanging in a museum or gallery? How can we understand what it is about art that speaks to us, that allows an artist to communicate with a viewer from a different time and place? Formal analysis — examination of form – is a skill that allows us to better understand and talk about art of all types, from drawings on paper to films and performance. Learning to look carefully and systematically, and learning about the myriad processes used to create art of all mediums connects us to the artist and allows us to appreciate his or her vision more fully.”
Each discussion will touch upon currently exhibiting Sharon Arts artists and their displayed work. Participants will explore the importance and relevance of the current artwork by comparing it to other art and even personal experiences. The discussion series is open to everyone with the purpose of providing a casual opportunity to experience art in new ways. It is recommended for artists and educators who wish to use art as a conduit for discussion in other areas, or for those who may be curious about what goes on in an artist’s mind.

Sharon Art Center’s second ArtBar Studio Night will be held Saturday, Mar.10 from 7 to 9 pm in the Exhibition Gallery, 30 Grove St. and Depot Square.
“ArtBars are popping up all over the country,” says Gallery Director Camellia Sousa. “Our first ArtBar in February was a huge success and we’re pleased to host this unique and exciting monthly event at Sharon Arts, where in our relaxed and casual setting in the main Exhibition Gallery you can complete your own acrylic painting to take home, based on the ArtBar themes of the month, with creative and timely ideas that anyone can do.”
The theme for this month’s ArtBar is “Animal Patterns.” Led by instructor Holly Alderman, participants will be supplied acrylic paints, brushes, small sponges for painting, stencils and pencils, blue tape for hard edges, and 8 by 10 inch canvas boards. Hearty cheese and crackers along with seltzer water will also be provided, with wine and beer available for a suggested donation.

An artist and photographer whose decorative arts are inspired by digital innovations and the beauty of local landscapes and weather, Alderman was a mural fellow at the National Academy Museum in New York and a teaching assistant in Design Science at Harvard College. Her art and décor are installed in residences and restaurants from San Francisco to DC to London and have appeared at Sunflowers Café in Jaffrey as well as at the White House, Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site, the Chelsea Flower Show and the Boston Design Center and on TOH, Dream House, Today, and Art.com. She will have an art show of Chanel paintings in March at Aesop’s Table in Peterborough inside the Toadstool Bookshop.
ArtBar studio nights, to be held every second Saturday of the month, are limited to 12 participants. Tickets are $25 and pre-registration is required. Call Camellia at (603) 924-2787 to reserve a spot.

In conjunction with the installation of a magical Garden of Imagination by renowned cardboard sculptor James Grashow, Sharon Arts seeks to show a collection of vases from twelve ceramic artists during the months of May and June.
Artists are asked to submit a proposal to create one signature vase and 12 “production” vases. The signature vase will be filled with flowers and arranged by members of local garden clubs and it will be up for auction at a gala event in June. Artists must set a value for the signature vase, and bidding will begin at one half of that price. Artists will receive 50 percent of the final auction price. The twelve vases would be sold in the store for a retail price of $65 and artists would receive 60 percent of any sales. This call is open to ceramic artists living and working within a 100-mile radius of Sharon Arts Center.
The entry deadline is March 15. Artists will receive a selection notification April 1, and the work must be dropped off on May 1 and 2 between the hours of 11 am and 5 pm. The gala date in June is to be announced. For entry requirements and a submission checklist, email camellia@sharonarts.org, call the Gallery at (603) 924-7676
