PAINTING - WEEKLY CLASSES

Creating a Series: Getting Out of the Rut! Mary Iselin

painting by Mary Iselin

painting by Mary Iselin

8 weeks, Mondays, 10AM–1PM
Mar. 19-May 14, NO CLASS APR. 23|P2

B As artists, we all dream of special projects. These can range from illustrating a book, to painting a dozen landscapes, to trying a new medium. Sometimes, these dreams remain unrealized due to inertia or fear, or because we are simply stuck in a rut. “Creating a Series” implies that we need more than one work of art to explore an idea or technique. In this class, we will identify our individual artistic longings; formulate workable, realistic goals for a series of paintings or drawings in which these longings can be expressed, and then work toward accomplishing these goals in a supportive group environment. Students will complete at least five pieces. All levels and all media are welcome! Tuition: $220, Member Rate: $195.

Composition:  Getting Down to the Bones
Mary Iselin

8 weeks, Mondays, 1:30-4:30PM
Mar. 19-May 14, NO CLASS APR. 23
B (This class will include plein air painting when the weather becomes irresistible!) Composition can be one of the trickiest subjects to study.  People to whom good composition comes naturally are often unable to articulate what they know intuitively, and books often do more to confuse than to elucidate.  In this class, however, we will attempt to consciously supply our brains with tools that we hope will soon become intuitive, natural, and easy to use, even outside.  To do this, we will paint at least five paintings using five common compositions, as explained in the book “Mastering Composition”  by Ian Roberts.  Hopefully, some of these paintings will be done plein air, weather permitting, as we travel to various locations around the Monadnock region. Students wishing to take the class but who are not landscape painters are welcome, as long as they don’t mind setting up their still-life outside.  All levels and mediums are welcome.  Tuition: $220, Member Rate: $195.
