Fall 2010 Open House Workshops
Discover the Artist in You! Saturday, September 11, 2010.
Our open house workshop series allows you to explore something new without the commitment of a 10-week class or an investment in materials. Enjoy tours of our state-of-the-art studios, take one workshop, or stay for an entire day. The morning and afternoon sessions are part “demo” and part hands-on exploration, and all are a terrific way to test drive a new medium or process. All materials and tools are provided with your registration fee. Enjoy lunch and chat with SAC staff, students, and faculty as you discover a new creative process. Learn about our “Earn & Learn” volunteer program that allows you to work your way towards free classes and workshops when you give of your time to Sharon Arts.

Youth Programs
Are you searching for enriching ways for your young artist to spend after-school time? Are you a homeschool family seeking art instruction? Our programs provide opportunities for art-hungry students to experiment with various materials, processes and concepts in a fun, social setting. Each youth program is filled with art adventures, challenges, collaborations and opportunities for a deeper understanding of fine art and craft.

After School Clay Club with James Mitschmyer
(Ages 7+, Teens also welcome!)
6 WEEKS (OCT. 12–NOV. 16) Tuesdays, 3:30–5:30PM
If you like to play in the mud, this is the place for you! In the After School Clay Club you’ll get messy while making fabulous clay creations. Get creative and explore different ways to build with coils, slabs and
more. During this class you will also learn to spin on a potter’s wheel. Discover how to turn mud into something permanent! Come with your creative ideas and leave with sculptures and pots that will last forever.
Bring an apron or an old shirt so you can get muddy. Materials fee: $20. M $125, NM $150. | ASCC

ARTventure Camp – Where Imagination and Creativity Meet -
(Ages 7 to 12)
We’ll go beyond traditional art making, putting the emphasis on process, collaboration, and fun! Artist Educators Naomi Graham and Karrie Mitschmyer will lead the activities with the help of our trained teen artist counselors! Weather permitting, each day will include an outdoor activity at parks and trails near the SAC grounds. Each Friday at noon a group celebration will take place showcasing the week’s ARTventure for family and friends to enjoy. Choose 1 or more weeks – attend all 5 weeks for a special discounted tuition rate!
- Week 5 August 16-20 | Art and the Language of Symbols with Karrie Mitschmyer- STILL HAS SPACES
Cultures from across continents since the beginning of time have used the visual language of symbols to convey their stories and the details of their lives. Delve into the meaning and power behind symbols in a variety of cultures as we explore Aboriginal, Egyptian, and Celtic civilizations. Learn about the colors, shapes, and styles that define these interesting cultural languages, and then create a symbolic language of your own using what you have learned.
Teen Programs
Teens 13+ are always welcome to our adult programs with the permission of the SAC school and a signed permission form. Contact the SAC school office to make arrangements. The programs below are designed especially with teen artists in mind.

ArtAccess is an intensive program at Sharon Arts for High School sophomores, juniors, and seniors from throughout the Monadnock region who are interested in increased exposure to and experience in the visual arts. Learn more here.

Teen Torch: Glass Galore with Janet Duchesneau
6 WEEKS (OCT. 12–NOV. 16) TUESDAYS, 3–5:30PM
Beginners welcome! From beads and buttons to small vases and sculptures, explore “melting madness” on the torch, using both soft (Italian) and hard (Borosilicate) glass. Teen torchworkers will learn about studio safety as they skillfully manipulate glass to create amazing and unique works of wearable, decorative, and functional glass art. Learn to shape, blow, and balance glass on and off the mandrel. Join us as you add a new dimension to your portfolio and enjoy learning about the scientific properties of this fun and addictive medium. Materials fee: $50. M $135, NM $160.
Professional Advancement Series for Artists
Join fellow artists and craftspeople for eye-opening interactive presentations and workshops that will provide practicing artists with practical tools. In step with the mission and vision of Sharon Arts, this series is designed to empower artists throughout the region by offering them vital tools to inform their creative practice and timely, meaningful support as they expand their creative reach.

Artist Advancement Series: Drafting an Artist Statement with Heather Lawless
SATURDAY, NOV. 13, 1:30–4:30PM
Beginners welcome! An artist statement should always exist in a fluid state—changing as your artwork progresses. A new or revised statement will drive your art practice as much as it reflects the values and intent of your work as it evolves. Artist statements have a wide audience and may need to have different emphasis for various recipients. This is an intensive and fun workshop where, along with a group of your peers, you’ll hone in on the precise words to depict your artistic process and explain the art you create. Use a computer at Sharon Arts, bring your own laptop, or use pen and paper as you shape your ideas. M $40, NM $50. | AW
Teacher Professional Development
These workshops, and the topics, materials and educational issues they explore, aim to challenge educators and provide them with additional tools and resources. Whether you are an art teacher or a classroom teacher looking for hands-on methods to explore other topics through a creative process, these workshops provide a range of activities certain to engage and challenge your students. Attendance certificates are available and refreshments are included.

Let’s Face It: Approaches to the Self-Portrait for Children with Evelyn Winter Pogorzelski
Saturday, OCT. 16 / 10AM–1PM
Beginners welcome! Drawing a self-portrait can be a daunting task. We’ll learn about ins and outs of drawing a self portrait, using the master works of several notable portrait artists as well as the history of portraiture for our foundation. We’ll talk about the use of the self-portrait as a communication tool to viewers and share ideas of how you can use the creation of a self-portrait in your classroom. There will be time for practice and experimentation as well as discussion about ways to modify portrait curriculum to different age groups and learning styles. Nature Journals with Deb DeCicco & Celeste Wasilewska Wyrosdic
Saturday, NOV. 6 /10AM–3PM
Beginners welcome! This workshop will introduce you to creating nature journals and focusing on drawing as a tool for observation. Work with bookmaker Celeste Wasilewska Wyrosdic to create a basic nature journal incorporating natural
materials with book construction to fashion a book that speaks to your plans for the insides. Learn how to integrate science, math, writing and drawing as the students observe and connect with the natural world. Discussion will include thinking like a naturalist and an artist, how science and art connect, working with longer projects, and the importance of asking questions. Artist Deb DeCicco will work with us to learn to observe and record critical details to describe our subjects accurately and quickly. Nature journals have provided valuable information and insights for centuries and continue to do so today. Weather permitting, we’ll work outdoors on the SAC grounds and garden. Bring your pencils, your observation skills, and your imagination! Materials fee: $20.
