An Evening of Jazz in the Gallery

A  jazz performance held in collaboration with MacDowell Medal Day Weekend at Sharon Arts Downtown Galleries, Friday, August 13th

Free and open to the public!

Peterborough, NH: On Friday, August 13th from 6:00 – 9:00 pm, Scott Mullett, director of the Keene Jazz Orchestra, will help to kick off Medal Day Weekend with An Evening of Jazz in the Gallery, held in collaboration with the MacDowell Colony as they award this year’s recipient, jazz musician Sonny Rollins, with the MacDowell Medal.

Mullett has played and toured with many of the greatest big bands of our time including those of Artie Shaw and Woody Herman. As a first-call tenor saxophonist in the greater Boston area, Mullett will honor MacDowell Medal Day recipient Sonny Rollins, who was called the “greatest living tenor saxophone player” by The New York Times. On August 13th, he will be joined for an evening of jazz sets by Anna Johnson on trombone, Christopher Robinson on bass and John Fisher on drums.

“I am convinced that all art has the desire to leave the ordinary,” Rollins said in a recent interview, conflating jazz with the creation of art. “But jazz, the world of improvisation, is perhaps the highest, because we do not have the opportunity to make changes. I believe that jazz is the music which best expresses the stirrings of the human soul.” It is in that spirit that Scott Mullet and his combo will honor Rollins’ rich legacy at the Sharon Arts Downtown Gallery the evening of August 13th

Visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy “An Artists’ Circle,” the Gallery’s current landmark exhibition featuring works by James Aponovich and Elizabeth Johansson and a dozen of their artist friends. Admission is free and is open to the public. Ample parking in Depot Square. Refreshments will be served. Further information is available by calling 603-924-7676.
