Workshop
on Creativity through Kinesiology at Sharon Arts Center Sat. Jan. 31
What does kinesiology
-- the science of movement -- have to do with creativity? Everything, according
to Brain Gym(R) Consultant Eve Kodiak.
"Every movement we
make has a physical correlate in our bodies," says Kodiak. "That
includes every eye movement, every thought, every time we pick up a pen
or a paintbrush or a musical instrument."
What does that have
to do with creativity?
"80% of the signals
we receive go from body to brain -- not the other way around.
By clarifying our intentions, and finding the movements that support these
intentions, we can access our creative powers in new and profound ways."
What do you mean by
accessing creative powers?
"Seeing the plot
of a story, whole. Feeling a new ease in the way a brush moves across
the canvas. Walking into a room full of allergens without sneezing.
Executing a pirouette without becoming dizzy. Knowing how to approach
a difficult subject with a friend or relative or colleague. Finding
new ways to cross whatever creative threshold you find yourself standing
upon."
What is Brain Gym(R)?
"Brain Gym(R), or
Educational Kinesiology (Edu-K), is a learning readiness program developed
by Dr. Paul Dennison, originally to cure dyslexia. He synthesized
research and movements from many fields: sports kinesiology, chiropractic,
developmental optometry, yoga, etc., and developed some movements of his
own. Edu-K is now used all over the world for every conceivable purpose
-- from learning differences to moderating board meetings, from health
to the performing arts to athletics to personal effectiveness."
How do you use Edu-K
in your workshop?
"We'll base the form
of the workshop on a basic protocol called a "balance." This is a process
in which we first clear our systems with some simple exercises, then set
a group goal and our own personal goals. These goals can be of any
magnitude -- from 'inner peace' to 'drawing a straight line on paper.'
We then experience how it feels to do a simple activity -- like drawing
a straight line or walking across the room. This gives us a benchmark
of where we are in terms of our goal.
"The next part of
the balance is where we actively work to create the new neural pathways
that help us achieve our goals. We do this through simple movement
patterns, which can be adapted to any ability.
"Once this is complete,
we revisit our activity. We notice the changes we feel drawing the
line or walking across the room. We celebrate our achievement, and
we're done!"
Are people expected
to achieve their goals in one session?
"It depends on the
goal, and on how much integration time is needed. Sometimes, the
change is instantaneous, sometimes, the full import of a goal doesn't kick
in for several months. But we all experience some change in our creative
process that we can feel."
