Ancient Stories Retold in Exotic Sculptures, Jewelry and Wall Hangings – Luann Udell is Sharon Arts’ Featured Artist throughout May at Sharon Arts Downtown Galleries – Special Trunk Show and Sale on May 8th from 10am to 6pm – public welcome!
Peterborough, NH- “When I visit a museum, I gaze eagerly upon the exhibits of ancient artifacts—pottery shards, bone tools, textile fragments too tattered and worn to identify. Tenderly mounted under temples of glass, carefully labeled for display, they seem to speak to us in whispers of a time forgotten, of a people lost to us in antiquity.” The words are those of Luann Udell, the featured artist for May at the Sharon Arts Downtown Galleries.
Bears and horses echoing the ancient walls of Lascaux; sea stones and shells, fossil fish, smooth river stones; ivory talismans, birds bringing songs from the corners of the earth and more are the stuff of Udell’s art. Inspired by tribal and prehistoric images that take us back to the dawns of another time, she painstakingly shapes fiber, polymer and mixed media into jewelry, sculptures, and wall hangings that retell the ancient stories, stories she believes have much to teach us today.
A nationally exhibited artist, Udell holds a B.A. in art history and an M.A. in education from the University of Michigan. She credits her art history courses with introducing her to the art of many world cultures that now influence her work, which has appeared in many books, newspapers and magazines across the country. Working from a renovated attached antique barn studio in Keene, NH., she is also a published writer, with a book, various articles, a magazine column and a blog to her credit. Udell is a double-juried member of the prestigious League of New Hampshire Craftsmen in fabric and non-metal jewelry.
“I believe we all have a place in this world, and a purpose,” she states. “Mine is to tell my story through my art. By telling that story, I hope to encourage others to tell their own stories, and find their own place in the world.” Luann Udell’s work will be on exhibit at the Sharon Arts Center’s Downtown Galleries in Depot Square, Peterborough through the month of May. Further information may be obtained at 603-924-2787, and on Udell’s website at www.luannudell.com .
