Sharon Arts Center presents ABSTRACT/REALISM: eight women two viewpoints in its Exhibition Gallery from July 12 - September 14, 2003.  This concept exhibit features eight artists who portray two diverse geographic and aesthetic groups. Four of the exhibitors represent an abstract perspective in their art and are all from the urban area of Washington, D.C.  The other four exhibitors represent a realist perspective in their art and are all from the rural Monadnock region.

This thematic exhibit compares two distinctly different perceptions.  The urban artists from Alexandria, VA, and Washington, D.C., are Jeanne Garant, Patricia Gerkin, Karen Hubacher and Martha Sewall; all are abstract artists.  The rural artists heralding from the Monadnock area are Jan Dolan, Georgia Fletcher, Ruth A. McCahon, and Sandy Sherman; they are painters in realism.  Each of the latter group is a Copley Society of Boston artist and/or Salmagundi Club exhibits award winner.  All of the featured artists exhibit their work nationally and have artworks in collections around the country.

Dichotomy and separation between art disciplines may at first appear to distinguish these artists from one another. However, the exhibit suggests that there are greater similarities among these eight women painters than there are differences.

        The Exhibition Gallery is located at 30 Grove Street, Peterborough, NH.  Opening reception is Saturday, July 12, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.  The public is invited; there is never an admission charge.  For more information, please call (603) 924-7676.
