Sharon Arts Center School of Arts and Crafts presents:

Gerry Williams
“The Unified Theory of Art”

a lecture by New Hampshire’s first Artist Laureate

Friday April 30, 2004  7pm
at the School of Arts and Crafts  Rt. 123 Sharon, NH 03458

Gerry WilliamsGerry Williams, New Hampshire’s first Artist Laureate, has been a model and source of inspiration for potters for nearly fifty years.   His life and work continue to be inspired by a diverse set of roots: his early years in India, the American Arts and Crafts movement, and the post World War II rebirth of craft-based studio art.  Gandhi’s example, especially his emphasis on the practical and symbolic role of basic craft practice, made an indelible impression on Williams.

In addition to creating ceramic pots and sculptural forms, Williams’ work includes writing, teaching and connecting pottery with his broad social concerns.  In 1972, Williams and his wife, Julie established The Studio Potter Foundation that provides an umbrella for his wide-ranging interests and for fostering projects by others.  Its principle activity, The Studio Potter magazine, which Williams edits, is a literary, broad and eclectic forum for historical, social, conceptual and technical aspects of ceramics.

Williams has exhibited and taught throughout New England and has lectured at the World Craft Conference; New York, Japan and Austria, Ceramic Conference, Finland; Ceramic Millenium 99, The Netherlands and Foshan International Ceramics Conference, China.

In 1958, Williams taught pottery here at The Sharon Arts Center. Today, we are honored to welcome him back for the first in our series of Sharon Art Lectures.
