PETERBOROUGH, NH --- This November, Sharon Arts Downtown Galleries will feature Shaunna Duffy Smith as the Artist of the Month. Duffy Smith is a resident of Merrimack, New Hampshire and strives to portray ordinary landscapes in an extraordinary way. Her work will be on display for the month of November.
The artist works in pastels and paints, capturing the rich landscapes that most people pass by. Her art reflects a variety of areas from lush wetlands to windswept winter scenes. "My art is a reflection of the world around me," states the artist. "I enjoy painting scenes to which I have emotional and personal ties. I want the viewer to experience the same feeling I have toward a place." She works from sketches and photos in the studio. She returns to the location multiple times as she creates her landscapes. "My favorite places are common ones," said Duffy Smith. "I want to make people stop to really look at the beauty they are missing. When on location, I take in the atmosphere, colors, and mood of the setting, so I can capture the essence of a particular place," she said. Duffy Smith began her formal art education at the age of six, with private art lessons that continued through high school. She graduated from Colby Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire with a studio arts degree in drawing and painting and continued on to get a Master's Degree in Education with an art emphasis from Notre Dame College. She currently works as an art teacher in the Manchester School system. As a member of the New Hampshire Art Association, the Pastel Society of New Hampshire and the Pastel Society of America, she has won awards in local, regional, and national shows. Her work is included in numerous private, public and corporate collections. More information and examples of her work are available at the Sharon Arts Downtown Galleries and at: fineartstudioonline.com/ShaunnaDuffySmith.
