The Sharon Arts Center Colonnade Gallery presents wood and metal
sculptures by Mary Ann Kelly. Each of Kelly's pieces goes through a labor
intensive process to make it look naturally formed. First, the individual
pieces of wood are scavenged and carefully edited, then stripped of bark
and whittled down to their core, sanded, cut, redirected and reattached
using mortise and tenon or dowels, sanded some more, and painted with a
blending of colors. Her artwork is sometimes influenced by her interest
and practice in yoga and in her energywork as a Reiki Master.
Kelly has an undergraduate degree in Art Education and a Masters degree in
Fine Arts. Over the years she has taught studio art, completed commissions
and exhibited extensively. Recently, she received a grant to attend the
Vermont Studio Center artist residency program. Kelly has had solo
exhibits at Thompson Gallery: Massachusetts College of Art in Boston,
Limited Editions Gallery in Newton Highlands, MA and Associated Foundation
of Greater Boston in Boston. Her group exhibits include The Fiber Art
Gallery: "Twigs and Sprigs: A celebration of line" in Amherst, MA, Susan
Brunner Gallery in Covington/New Orleans, LA, Woman's Interart Gallery:
"Boston Seven" in New York, NY and Art Complex Museum: "The Boston Seven"
in Duxbury, MA. Currently, Kelly is completing commissions and assembling
new works for exhibit in her studio in Northampton, MA.
