PETERBOROUGH, NH--- Sharon Arts Downtown Exhibition Gallery reopens this summer on July 3rd with the exhibition, WATER: Mystery & Plight. This exhibition, curated by Susan Callihan and Christine Destrempes, addresses an alarming consequence of the global water crisis with the installation 13,699, by Christine Destrempes while reminding us of the beauty and contemplative value of water with photography by Mary Lang.

Christine Destrempes created the installation 13,699 to raise awareness of the number of people who die every day from preventable, water-related diseases because they do not have access to clean water. Clear plastic, recycled water bottle caps, collected from the Keene, NH Transfer Station, represent each person who dies, tying the environmental and social impact of the water bottling industry to the plight of people in developing countries.

The caps, strung on monofilament and hung from a 10' x 10' metal grid, form a fluid, cube-like structure with one point of access and exit. The production of 13,699 was taken into public venues, high schools, and colleges. Hundreds of people listened to Destrempes' presentation on global water issues and art for social change, and volunteered to drill holes in and string bottle caps. 13,699 is an invitation to look deeply, yet gently, at a disturbing humanitarian crisis statistic by literally entering into it.

Destrempes' paintings and monotypes have been exhibited nationally in galleries and museums and are in numerous private and corporate collections including Nixon, Peabody LLP and North Run Capital. She is represented by Bevara in Ipswich, MA and is a 2009 recipient of the Anne Slade Frey Charitable Trust Grant.

Mary Lang's exploration of water as an artist and photographer has been inseparable from her journey as a Buddhist practitioner. She states, "Water is fluid, always moving, dissolving thoughts and emotions into the openness of empty mind." Her photographs of water reflections confuse surface and depth, creating color field drawings of captured light, evoking mystery and uncertainty. The elements, water and earth, earth and sky, fire and water - often seem to merge, the scale is unknown, and yet the beauty of the prints makes that uncertainty delightfully free from concept. Lang's photographs range in sizes from 15" x 22" to 30" x 40" and will be for sale.

Lang has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Smith College and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from Pratt Institute. Her work has been exhibited widely, is in numerous private collections, and is in the permanent collections of Fidelity Investments Corporation, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, Simmons College, Smith College Museum of Art, Spencer Museum of Art, and Harvard Business School.

WATER: Mystery & Plight will be on exhibit from July 3rd through August 2nd in the Downtown Galleries located at 30 Grove Street in Peterborough. The preview reception will be held on Friday, July 3rd from 5- 7pm, and is open to the public. Ample parking in Depot Square, admission is free.
