Wooden Wings - Painted Feathers
March 4 - April 3, 2005

(Peterborough, NH) The award - winning Gallery at Sharon Arts presents "Wooden Wings - Painted Feathers" from March 4 - April 3 at 30 Grove Street in Peterborough. Exhibitors include Jing-Hua Gao Dalia, James Grashow, William J. Schnute and the late Robert and Virginia Warfield. The exhibition showcases a variety of birds depicted by the artists in sculpture and watercolor painting. An opening reception will be held on March 4 from 5:30 - 8pm.

While birds are the common theme, each artist explores a different medium. Artist Jing-Hua Gao Dalia works in watercolor focusing on birds, flowers and landscapes; James Grashow creates bird and flower sculptures from corrugated cardboard; William J. Schnute carves from wood; and the late Robert and Virginia Warfield carved their birds from wood, woodburned and painted them with oils. In their own style and medium each artist brings their subject to life.

Born in Taipei, Taiwan Jing-Hua Gao Dalia received a B.A. in fine art from National Taiwan Normal University and did graduate work at the University of Hawaii. Her recent exhibits include group shows at the Currier Museum of Art, Manchester, NH; New Hampshire Art Association, Portsmouth, NH and Copley Society of Boston as well as an individual show at Three Graces Art Gallery, Portsmouth, NH. Dalia's paintings have also been published in numerous art books.

James Grashow received both his BFA and his MFA at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. His work is in the permanent collections of businesses and museums such as Morgan Stanley, Walt Disney, and Museum of Modern Art. Grashow's exhibits include "Model World", Aldrich Museum, CT, "The Menagerie", Allan Stone Gallery, and "Reflections - 9/11", Norwalk Community College.

William J. Schnute has been a full time woodcarver for 30 years. He lived most of those years in California where he was a member of the Carmel Art Association for 15 years, serving for two years on their Board of Directors. Working as a carving instructor and professional woodcarver, he created original designs that include large entryways, full wall murals, furniture and sculpture. Schnute is currently living in Wilton, NH and teaching a woodcarving class at the Sharon Arts Center.

The late Robert and Virginia Warfield, residents of Jaffrey, were two of a handful of artists to develop decorative bird carving. They worked for twenty-five years making over 7,000 birds, which were sold in 44 states and 8 foreign countries. The birds were carved from basswood by Robert and woodburned and

Awarded "Best Art Gallery" in 2002 by New Hampshire Magazine, The Sharon Arts Center is a non-profit center that has been committed to the arts and artists for more than 50 years. The School at Sharon Arts received the "Best Art Classes" award from New Hampshire Magazine in 2003. The Gallery is located at 30 Grove Street, Peterborough, and is open from 10a.m. to 6p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10am to 8pm Friday & Saturday and on Sundays from noon until 5 p.m. Admission is free.
