Contact: Alexandra Wall
alex@sharonarts.org

(603) 924-7256, ext. 3

Hari Kirin, author of “Art & Yoga: Kundalini Awakening in Everyday Life,” will present a program on art and yoga as complementary practices at the Sharon Arts Center School of Art & Craft, 457 NH Rt. 123, on Sunday, July 31 from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Participants will learn step-by-step guidelines for their personal practice and, according to Kirin, “hopefully gain inspiration to work with groups and in the community.” Simple breathing, movement, and meditation exercises for relaxation and creativity will be demonstrated. No prior yoga experience is necessary, but Kirin encourages those attending to wear loose or stretchy clothing and to eat lightly before the program.
From 1:30 to 2 p.m. there will be an introduction on caring for body, soul and spirit; from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Kirin will demonstrate how to put art and yoga into practice; and from 3:30 to 4 p.m. there will be a question and answer period.
An artist and yoga instructor, Hari Kirin Kaur Khalsa teaches at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, the Antrim Girls Shelter, Omega Institute for Holistic Health, and the Union Mill in Peterborough. Her work may be seen at www.artandyoga.com.
There is a $25 fee for the workshop. The author’s book, newly published this summer, will also be available for purchase.

Sharon Arts Center Introduces New Executive Director: An Artist, Entrepreneur, and Art/Community Visionary

The nonprofit organization Sharon Arts Center is pleased to announce the selection of Keri Wiederspahn as Executive Director, effective June 1, 2011! Wiederspahn will replace interim Director Bob Pettegrew who joined Sharon Arts in January 2010.

“I have known Keri for several years, and am fully aware of her extensive background and experience. She is accomplished as a leader, an artist, and a businesswoman and her knowledge of how to run a gallery, school, and retail store will serve Sharon Arts well,” Commented outgoing Director Bob Pettegrew. “Keri simply bubbles with creative ideas and plans for Sharon Arts Center’s future and I can’t imagine a better choice to take over the helm as I step down.”

For nearly twenty years, Keri Wiederspahn’s life and career have centered around art and community, from her BFA in Sculpture at Parsons School of Design in New York, to her life-long career in both for and non-profit art education and community enrichment, to her role as the newly appointed Executive Director of Sharon Arts Center. Wiederspahn, a resident of Nelson, NH,  is proud to call the Monadnock Region home and is very focused on the growth and development of the area as an arts destination.

“We are very excited to have Keri join the Sharon Arts family,” expressed Board Chair Carolyn Howard.  “Finding someone with a love of art and a strong business mind posed an exciting challenge. Keri brings so much to the table and we are thrilled to work with her to lead Sharon Arts into a creatively brilliant and sustainable future.”

Previously, Ms. Wiederspahn was founder, director, and teacher of Creative Hands Art Studio and Atelier Gallery in Madison, NJ, for fifteen years where she applied her dedication and commitment to artists of all ages and abilities through a dynamic visual arts program and professional gallery. This for-profit art venture involved the development of a successful school and gallery model which propelled the business into great success with expansion to three locations and a student body of nearly 2,000 annually. In 2008, as an initial founder of The Starving Artist, a Keene, NH, volunteer-run nonprofit, she worked closely with husband filmmaker Aaron Wiederspahn and musician Laina Barakat to create an artist collaborative group focused on connecting and serving artists and art aficionados through performance, lecture, workshop, and exhibits.

Wiederspahn, an artist in her own right, has received two recent NH State Arts Council Grants (2008 and 2010) to pursue study of Russian-Byzantine Iconography with Ksenia Pokrovsky of Boston, learning the traditional egg-tempera methods of mixing egg yolk with natural organic pigments. She resides in Nelson, NH, with her husband Aaron Wiederspahn, and her five children. Having summered in New Hampshire since her teen years, she developed a fondness for the Sharon Arts Center early on and recalls having her first professional exhibit of her artwork at the Center upon graduating from Parsons.

“I am honored and privileged to partner with the board and staff to steer Sharon Arts into its next phase of growth as a creative art community,” expressed Wiederspahn. “I am eager to begin the process of defining and amplifying a clearer voice for Sharon Arts through decisive leadership, inspiration, creative programming and innovation.”

“As an artist myself, I know of the beautiful community that develops from a well-nurtured love and commitment for the arts and artists in general,” explained Wiederspahn. “The sincere and driven collective voices of Sharon Arts employees, volunteers, students and benefactors will drive the organization into its next renewed phase of development—a wonderful mix of opportunity and challenge that intersects with and allows for bigger dreams to be born and fulfilled.

Sharon Arts Center One of More Than 1300 Organizations in U.S. to Offer Free Benefits and Discounts to Military Personnel and Their Families Summer 2011

Today Sharon Arts Center announced the launch of Blue Star Museums, a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and more than 1,300 museums across Blue Star MuseumsAmerica to offer free admission and special discounts to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2011. Sharon Arts is pleased to offer member benefits including discounts at Sharon Arts Fine Craft Gallery and discounted tuition at the Sharon Arts School of Art and Craft.

“Sharon Arts Center is proud to participate in Blue Star Museums,” explained Melanie McDonald- Director of Community Outreach & Communications. “Extending a special welcome and benefits to military personnel and their families is a wonderful way we can honor servicemen and woman with the beauty and warmth that art conveys.”

This year, more than 1,324 (and counting) museums in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and American Samoa are taking part in the initiative. This year’s Blue Star Museums represent not just fine arts museums, but also science museums, history museums, nature centers, and 70 children’s museums.

“Blue Star Museums may be the program at the NEA of which I am proudest,” said National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Rocco Landesman. “Blue Star Museums recognizes and thanks our military families for all they are doing for our country, and simultaneously begins young people on a path to becoming life-long museum goers.”

New Hampshire participants include: The Mariposa Museum (Peterborough, NH), Cathedral of the Pines (Rindge, NH), Currier Museum of Art (Manchester, NH) Manchester Artists Association Art Gallery (Manchester, NH), Canterbury Shaker Village (Canterbury, NH), and Strawberry Banke Museum(Portsmouth, NH). The Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston are among many Massachusetts participants, as well as Brattleboro Museum & Art Center in Vermont. An extensive list of New England participants can be found at www.arts.gov/bluestarmuseums. Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families.

“Last year the success of the inaugural year of the Blue Star Museums program showed that partnerships between the nation’s museum and military communities are a natural,” said Blue Star Families Chairman Kathy Roth-Douquet. “We are thrilled that 300,000 military family members visited our partner museums [and organizations] in the summer of 2010. We hope to exceed that number this year as the military community takes advantage of the rich cultural heritage they defend and protect every day. We appreciate the NEA and the nation’s museums who chose to partner with us. We also are grateful to our friends at the MetLife Foundation, the lead supporter of the Blue Star Museums outreach initiative, whose generous donation helps make our work possible.”

The exhibition features highlights from ArtAccess student’s portfolios showcasing each teen’s personal artwork as well as collaborative pieces the class worked on throughout the year. Silent Auction winner Ken Sullivan (Temple, NH) with James Mitschmyer's Ceramic Vessel with brushwork!

James Mitschmyer. The black and white vase, standing about 24” high and showcasing Mitschmyer’s accomplished Asian-inspired brushwork of trees and mountainous landscapes, was a popular item during a silent auction at the Spring Open House on April 16th, dedicated to raising money for the Sharon Arts School’s ceramics program. This was the first silent auction event at the School of Art and Craft in 3 years. The Open House event helped to raise funds towards studio upgrades for the Ceramics program at Sharon Arts, including a new slab-roller for students who specialize in handbuilding. Funds acquired will also support new kiln parts, and glaze purchases to expand the resources available in the Sharon Arts clay program.
“The excitement and enthusiasm that was generated from the spirit of the auction was exactly the kind of atmosphere that Sharon Arts is always nurturing- both the students and the patrons were pleased to see the auction support our cause, knowing that ceramics students will benefit from the fundraising for years to come,” said Alexandra Wall, School Director. “We hope to have future events entail the same level of participation and excitement. I look forward to having visitors to the School again, rallying to support our programs and facility.”
